Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge

The Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge is a circular walk, covering three major peaks in the Yorkshire Dales.

Pen-Y-Ghent, is the smallest of the three peaks at 694m. Its name means ‘hill on the border’ (Celtic) or ‘hill of the winds’ (Welsh). Its steep incline boasts stunning views across the Dales with rocky terrain making it an interesting challenge.

Whernside is the highest of the three peaks at 736m, with views of Morecombe Bay and the Irish Sea on a clear day.  This peak has a slow, gradual climb with incredible views and scenery along the way.

Ingleborough has a height of 723m and is one of the most popular peaks. Its dramatic steep side leads to a flat top with picturesque 360 degree views.  Although this is another steep ascent to conquer, it is over quickly and has breath-taking views.

You can start the route from several different points, finishing in the same place. Covering 39.2km (24,5miles), the three starting points are Horton-in-Ribblesdale, Chapel-le-Dale, and Ribblehead which is just over the border from Cumbria into North Yorkshire.

A tough challenge with over 1600m of ascent and 39.2km in distance, this all needs to to be accomplished within 12hrs, meaning an average walking speed of 3.5km/hr. So, not for the faint hearted!

The reason our team took on the challenge was to raise funds and awareness for Martin House Childrens Hospice, a family-led hospice, providing free of charge care for children and young people with life-limiting illnesses.

Currently looking after 428 families and 155 bereaved families, Martin House has nine bedrooms; seven for planned admission and two for emergencies. Each child is allocated their own room and all bedrooms are equipped for all children, including those with complex needs.

Sam, Josh, Ben, Joe, Dale, George, Nadine and Angela completed the gruelling challenge in 10 hours, 10 minutes (including stoppage time), and have so far raised an impressive £3035.00!

Congratulations to you all! Such an amazing achievement you should be very proud of.
